Meet the Chief Deputy

Major Donald A. Bewkes Jr. began his career with the Goochland County Sheriff's Office on June 1981 as a Deputy Sheriff. As a Deputy Sheriff, Major Bewkes has served in all positions of the Sheriff's Office including general patrol, traffic enforcement, criminal investigations, civil process, court security, and grants manager for all highway safety projects. In 1992, Major Bewkes was appointed to the rank of Captain in the position of Chief Deputy. During that time to present, Major Bewkes has been responsible for the overall daily operations of the Goochland County Sheriff's Office which includes, but not limited to, Patrol Division, Investigations Division, Administrative Division, Court Security Division, Communications Division and the Special Operations Division. The Special Operations Division includes the Rescue Team, Hostage Negotiations Team, and the Emergency Mobile Communications Team.  On January 1, 2005, Major Bewkes was promoted to his current rank and is responsible for the agency when the Sheriff is not available.


Major Bewkes graduated with honors from the University of Richmond where he earned a Masters Degree in Human Resource Management and a Bachelors Degree in Human Resource Management with a minor in Leadership. Major Bewkes is a graduate of the UVA Sorenson Institute for Political Leadership, the 23rd session of the Virginia Forensic Science Academy, the 23rd session of the North Carolina State University Administrative Officers Management Program, the University of North Florida Senior Law Enforcement Management Program, Master Assessor for the Virginia Law Enforcement Professional Standards Commission, and has been a certified DCJS instructor since 1982. Additional training includes courses in Motor Vehicle Accident Reconstruction and Accident Reconstruction with the use of Micro Computers from the University of North Florida, U.S. Secret Service Executive Protection Course, International Association of Chiefs of Police S.W.A.T. Command and Supervisor Program, and the Hostage Rescue/High Risk Warrant Service at Blackwater. Prior to beginning his law enforcement career Major Bewkes graduated from Missouri Military Academy and served four years of active duty in the U.S.N. as an Operations Specialist, with deployments to the Mediterranean, Middle East, and Caribbean. Major Bewkes has been a member of the Goochland County Highway Safety Committee, the University of Richmond Alumni Association, the Forensic Science Alumni Association, A.O.M.P Alumni Association, Sigma Phi Epsilon and American Legion Post 215.
