Goochland County - March 12 2017 2.3 magnitude Earthquake

Goochland County experienced a 2.3 magnitude earthquake at approximately 10:10 p.m. on March 12, 2017.

The earthquake epicenter originated west of Oilville on the west side of Fairground Road (Rt. 632) near the intersection of Broad Street Road (Rt. 250) and occurred at a depth of 11.6km. United States Geological Survey (USGS) and Virginia Department of Emergency Management (VDEM) confirmed the earthquake.

No reports of injuries or damages resulting from the earthquake have been reported as of 8:30 a.m. on Monday, March 13, 2017. Goochland County and VDEM request citizens check over their homes and property for any visual or hidden damages. Attention should be paid to foundations, chimneys, and sheetrock of homes and businesses.

Citizens with property damage are urged to report it to the County by calling (804) 556-5815, when prompted press “0” to speak to an attendant. Those with general concerns about the earthquake should contact the non-emergency number for Dispatch at (804) 556-5348. Citizens are reminded to dial 911 for any police, fire, or medical emergency, which is a threat to life or property.

Citizens are reminded that the appropriate action to reduce injury and death during earthquakes is “Drop, Cover, and Hold On”. Drop where you are, onto your hands and knees. This position protects you from being knocked down and allows you to stay low and crawl to shelter if nearby. Cover your head and neck with one arm and hand. Hold on until the shaking stops.

County staff will continue to monitor the after effects of the earthquake and will advise the public as necessary.
