Geographic Information System (GIS) is a system that is comprised of 3 major pieces, geography, data (information) and a computer. It is the blending of paper mapping and any information about the place being mapped. It is an effective way to model our County.
The current capabilities of the GIS include the ability to display, print and manipulate numerous layers of data including aerial photographic images, demographic and public safety information, property ownership, tax, land use, and zoning information, utility locations, roads, natural features, topography and many other man-made and environmental features.
GIS is "a combination of layers of information about a place to give you a better understanding of that place. The layers of information combined depend upon your purpose --Finding the best location for a new store, analyzing environmental damage, viewing similar crimes in a city to detect a pattern, and so on."
