[ARCHIVED] Goochland County Remembers September 11th, 2001

Goochland County Remembers September 11, 2001

The morning of September 11th a group of first responders gathered at Goochland County Fire-Rescue Station 5 to remember those lost during the tragic acts that occurred on September 11th, 2001.

Goochland County’s First Responder Service was started in 2010 by then Chief William ‘Bill’ MacKay. During the event, speakers took turns reading the names of the first responders who lost their lives in the attack or due to related illnesses. Members of Goochland County Fire-Rescue tolled the bell, followed by a call out on the radio in remembrance of the hundreds of First Responders who paid the ultimate sacrifice when the Twin Towers fell. Members of American Legion 215 laid a wreath at the memorial for fallen fire-fighter Michael “Tink” G. Sims.

At 7:00 PM, community members gathered around the 9/11 memorial at Fire-Rescue Station 1 in Manakin. Placed in 2012, the two pieces of steel were from the 92nd floor of the north tower. It is believed the first plane hit between the 92nd and 94th floor. The rippling of the steel beam fragments shows the impact of that plane.

During the event, members of the Goochland County Department of Fire-Rescue and Emergency Services spoke, recalling the events and devastation that happened 23 years ago. Captain Sclater encouraged attendees to not let the day become politized. In her closing, she quoted David Levithan, “What separates us from the animals, what separates us from the chaos, is our ability to mourn people we’ve never met.”

The Goochland County Manakin Station 1 September 11th Memorial was made possible by the gracious support of the Freedom Flag Foundation and contributions from community businesses. The memorial is located at 180 River Road West, Manakin-Sabot, VA 23103 and is open to the public.
