Fire Rescue Newsflash Image

Goochland County Department of Fire-Rescue and Emergency Services received a report of a structure fire in the 2300 block of Rockville Road in the eastern end of the county at 0841 hours on Wednesday, April 23, 2025. Engine 631 arrived on scene at 0850 hours and reported several sheds on fire with the fire threatening a nearby house. Fire crews immediately began focusing on saving the house and extinguishing the sheds. Crews battled flames that had spread to multiple sheds through a very dense area of yard storage. The fire burned an area roughly an acre to an acre and half and was stopped at a farmer's field with green vegetation. Crews were able to stop the fire before it reached the house, however the home did sustain minor damage.

Water supply was handled with 8 tankers, 6 tankers from Goochland County Department of Fire-Rescue and Emergency Services and 2 tankers from Hanover County Fire-EMS Department. With no hydrants in the area, the majority of the tankers shuttled multiple loads of water from a dry hydrant located in a nearby pond. Some were able to fill up at the closest hydrant, roughly one mile away. Approximately 100,000 gallons of water were used to extinguished the fire. The incident was marked under control at 1300 hours; and is no longer a threat to nearby structures.

Crews will remain on the scene later into the evening, and will continue to visit the site over the next 24-48 hours to ensure the debris is fully extinguished. Due to the amount of yard storage burned, smoke may remain visible in the area for the next 24-48 hours.

One firefighter sustained minor injuries was transported to a nearby hospital as a precaution, no civilians were injured.  The cause of the fire is undetermined and under investigation at this time.

Approximately 35 firefighters were on scene between Goochland County Department of Fire-Rescue and Emergency Services and Hanover County Fire-EMS Department. Metro Richmond Flying Squad responded and provided rehab services to the crews on-site. Powhatan County Fire and Rescue along with Louisa County Department of Fire and EMS assisted with backfilling Goochland Fire Stations. The Department of Forestry responded with their bulldozer and assisted with creating a fire line and removing debris.

Motorists are advised to use caution when driving in the area and are encouraged to monitor the Goochland County Sheriff's Office Mobile App for road closures.
