[ARCHIVED] Revisions to Commercial Construction Values

Due to the continued rising cost of materials, labor, and recent inflation, the Department of Building Inspection has been forced to re-evaluate the dollar values used to calculate the overall value of commercial construction projects. These quantities are based on the cost of construction per square foot and are used by staff of the Customer Service Center in determining the value of commercial construction to assess permit fees. The last time these values were adjusted was back in 2018.

The value per square foot of commercial construction is based on several factors. Those factors include the region of the country in which the project is being constructed, labor costs, unit costs, and size of the project. While RSMeans recommends using the median column for estimating costs, the Department of Building Inspection used the 25% column when determining project costs. The ¼ column indicates that 25% of the projects had lower costs and 75% had higher costs.

The revised commercial construction values will go into effect July 01, 2024, and only apply to commercial building permits. These revisions do not affect how staff calculates the construction values used to determine the fees for residential building permits.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the Department of Building Inspection or the Customer Service Center staff for assistance.
