[ARCHIVED] Goochland County Staff Roll up their Sleeves with Habitat for Humanity

Habitat Build 2024

On Friday, May 17, 2024, staff from the Community Development departments of Building Inspection, Environmental, Land Development, and Transportation, and the Customer Service Center volunteered to assist with the Habitat for Humanity build taking place in Goochland County.

“I was inspired during a WICED meeting, Women in Code Enforcement and Development, where the topic was Habitat for Humanity’s support of the redevelopment of a Mobile Home Park in Charlottesville.”, said Ashley Parker, Customer Service Manager. She continued, “Working with the Building Inspection Department, I knew Habitat for Humanity built homes in Goochland County.  I reached out to our contact with Habitat to coordinate a volunteer opportunity for our department!” Staff from the Department of Building Inspections and the Customer Service Center are now in their fourth year participating with the Habitat for Humanity build. “I look forward to this all year!”, exclaimed Parker.

Traditionally, the staff have assisted with the construction of the floor joist and sub floor for a new single-family dwelling.  The day is split into two shifts to allow for all staff to participate, while still being able to provide citizens with support in the office. Casey Littlefield, Deputy Building Official, said, “The Department of Building Inspection looks forward to serving the community and this is one of the many ways we are able to provide much needed outreach. This is one of my favorite things that we do.”

To encourage giving back to the community where they work, Goochland County offers employees volunteer hours each year. “We are thankful for this team building opportunity, outside the office, where we can all work together to give back to our community which we proudly serve.”, stated Parker.

A special thank you to the Hanover County Deputy Building Official, Mike Eutsey, for conducting the floor joist inspection for the county.
