[ARCHIVED] JROTC Cadets Continue to Give Back at Tire Amnesty and Document Shredding Event

JROTC Cadets Continue to Give Back at Tire Amnesty and Document Shredding Event

Goochland High School’s JROTC program focuses on teaching students’ leadership skills while reinforcing what it takes to be a good citizen.  Once again, the cadets will be assisting with the Goochland County Tire Amnesty and Document Shredding event, scheduled for November 16th.

The Tire Amnesty and Document Shredding event allows residents to bring up to five banker boxes of documents for shredding, and up to 10 off rim tires for disposal: including agriculture type tires.

LtCol, Williams, USMC, Retired, is proud of his cadets for serving at this event. “We decided to get involved because, as a Marine Corps JROTC program, our focus is in part on helping our cadets become better citizens.  Part of that is making sure that we are giving back to the communities in which we live.”, he said.

Since 2017, with a brief break during COVID, the JROTC program has been volunteering at this event.  The cadets assist with everything from traffic control to removing tires and banker boxes from the participants’ vehicles, which is William's’ favorite part of the event, “…getting the cadets together supporting Goochland County. It also builds a lot of teamwork in our cadets as they go about executing the event.

“JROTC volunteers contribute their time and skills to help make our annual Tire Amnesty/Document Shredding Event successful, benefiting both the community and the environment.”, said Dwayne Jones, Special Projects/Asset Manager for Goochland County.  Last year, the event drew a record-breaking crowd. With almost 14,000 pounds of documents being shredded and over 1,300 tires collected.  These efforts reduce hazards from improper tire and paper disposal.  “The kids do a great job of getting the event done while being kind and polite to everyone at the same time. By the time they are done, they are covered in mud and dirt. I can't imagine what it would be like to have the event without them.”, said Jones.

The Tire Amnesty and Document Shredding event will be held on November 16th from 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM at 2744 Fairground Road.  For more information, please visit www.goochlandva.us or call 804-657-2025.
