Firefighters on the Goochland and Powhatan water rescue teams, Chesterfield firefighters, and members of the Virginia National Guard who are a part of the Virginia Helicopter Aquatic Rescue Team (VAHART) will be training in parts of Goochland and Powhatan later this week.

People who live or work along Route 6 (River Road) near Route 522 (Maidens Road) could hear helicopters or see low flying aircraft in that area on Thursday morning, going into the early afternoon.

VAHART is a joint venture between the Virginia Army National Guard and Chesterfield Fire and EMS, utilizing the UH-60 Blackhawk with hoist capabilities for search and rescue missions. If needed, the team can perform rescue missions along bodies of water, like the James River, or in mountainous areas with difficult terrain. Chesterfield Fire and EMS’s Scuba rescue team also trains regularly with firefighters from Goochland County Fire and Rescue and Powhatan County Fire and Rescue’s water rescue teams. It gives us the chance to collaborate with some of our partners that we may need to work with in a real-life emergency.
