[ARCHIVED] Winter Storm Highlights Goochland County Animal Protection’s Community Impact

Animal Protection Empty Kennels

As many of us were preparing our homes for the recent winter storm, Goochland County Animal Protection was gearing up to ensure animals in our community would be well cared for during the storm. Thanks to the dedication and efforts of staff, volunteers, and the community, every available dog in the shelter found a safe home prior to the storm either through adoption, foster-to-adopt, or storm fostering.

Goochland Animal Protection is incredibly grateful to the community for its unwavering commitment to animal welfare, posting on social media, “Our kennels are empty, our hearts are full”. They expressed special appreciation to Goochland Pet Lovers and volunteers for their continued support. Staff and volunteers worked tirelessly to help each potential adopter and foster through the surge of visitors at the shelter.

In addition to the animals in the shelter, Animal Protection responded during the storm to help other animals in need. In one instance, officers rescued two dogs from a vehicle after their owner suffered a medical emergency – and even provided care for the owner’s horse, to ensure safety during these freezing conditions.

Resources following the storm:

  • Animal Protection is providing potable water for livestock and pets for residents in need by appointment. Residents must bring their own fillable containers to Fire Station 5 (2710 Fairground Road). Appointments are available from 9 AM to 5 PM.  Those in need can call the Emergency Operations Center at (804) 556-5678 to schedule an appointment.

Pet safety reminders during freezing weather:

  • Keep pets indoors whenever possible.
  • Provide warm bedding off cold floors.
  • Dogs cannot be left outside on tethers or chains when temperatures fall below 32 degrees.
  • Use pet-safe ice melt to protect paws.

If you see an animal in distress or without proper shelter, contact Goochland County Animal Protection at 804-556-5302.
